LESSON POINTS:
  • Ruth was living with Naomi, her mother-in-law, in Bethlehem, and they were living on the barley that Ruth would glean from Boaz' field every day. Boaz was related to Naomi's husband who had died some years before and was very kind to both Naomi and Ruth. He had allowed Ruth to glean much barley from his field and the barley season was almost over.
  • One day Naomi spoke to her daughter-in-law about how life was for Ruth. She asked Ruth if she wanted Naomi to seek rest for her and she mentioned how Boaz was related to them. The Old Testament laws commanded that it was the closest living relative's responsibility to take care of their relatives. Naomi was doing something good for Ruth. She told Ruth that Boaz was separating the chaff from the grain that very night. She told her to take a bath, put on a little perfume and to go down onto the threshing floor where Boaz was working. Naomi suggested that Ruth wait until Boaz had finished eating and drinking, and when he was resting, she should go and warm his feet. Due to this kind act, Boaz made arrangements so that he could marry Ruth.
  • We can see how wonderful the LORD works through others to fulfill His wishes. God used Ruth, even though she was a stranger, still yet she was a moral and God-fearing woman who becomes the great-grandmother of King David.
"Older Student" Tips:
  • Boaz and Ruth had a baby and named him Obed, Obed had a son named Jesse, and Jesse had a son named David. David was the boy who killed a giant named Goliath and eventually became King over Israel.
  • Ruth's love for her mother-in-law overflowed with wonderful blessings for Ruth. What were some of those blessings?
